On Friday Jan. 29, George Washington Elementary School third-graders received a special visit from District 19 Assemblyman Edward P. Ra who educated students about the local government.

During his visit, Assemblyman Ra discussed how laws are passed in New York State, the duties of an assemblyman and an explanation of the state budget. To further explain how a law is passed, Assemblyman Ra had students try to pass a law to eliminate homework in the state. He had students play the roles of assemblymen, senators and the New York State Governor, unveiling the lawmaking process of needing a majority vote and the Governor’s approval to create a new law.

In addition, class representatives asked Assemblyman Ra how he became an assemblyman, what laws he has put into place since being elected and his favorite and least favorite aspects of his position.
