West Hempstead High School student Gabriel Berkowitz has been named one of 15,000 finalists in the 2016 National Merit Scholarship Program.

To qualify for finalist standing, the 16,000 high school seniors designated as National Merit semifinalists were required to maintain high academic performance and plan to attend college as a full-time student in the fall. They also had to receive a recommendation by their high school principal.

National Merit Scholarship award recipients are also determined by their academic records, two sets of SAT scores, their school’s curriculum and grading system, and a personal essay.

More than 7,000 finalists will be notified between March and mid-June on whether they will receive a National Merit Scholarship.

The district is extremely proud of Gabriel’s accomplishments and wishes him much success as he continues in the competition.
