A celebration of excellence

West Hempstead High School celebrated the accomplishments and achievements of the Class of 2016 during the annual Senior Awards Assembly on June 6.

Families, administrators and community members applauded the seniors as they received scholarships and awards for their leadership, character and community service. Principal Alvaro Escobar recognized the students for their discipline, dedication and sacrifices over the course of their academic careers.

“You and your parents should be very proud of what you have done,” he said. “Being recognized is not the only reward; it is important for each of you to see what is within yourselves to excel and contribute to society. It is this set of qualities and virtues that will serve you well in the future and in whatever you choose to do.”

During the ceremony, faculty and administrators bestowed the President’s Academic Excellence and Outstanding Achievement awards, as well as departmental awards, while individual community members and organization representatives honored recipients with scholarships.

In addition, valedictorian Maheen Khan and salutatorian Gabriel Berkowitz were formally acknowledged.
