Heading Back to the Classroom

The district welcomes parents and educators to attend the inaugural Middle Level Parent Institute on Saturday, Nov. 5, at Oceanside Middle School.

The event will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a keynote address by Rosalind Wiseman, author of the New York Times best-seller “Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and Other Realities of Adolescence.” Following, attendees will have the choice of participating in two 45-minute workshops to help them navigate the middle school years. The workshops will focus on the importance of developing the academic, social and emotional well-being of students in order for them to excel in middle school, high school, college and careers.

The program is being spearheaded by Oceanside’s middle school principal, Dr. Allison Glickman-Rodgers, and ELA and reading director, Dr. Beth Zirogiannis. Also in attendance will be West Hempstead Middle School Principal Dina Reilly, alongside educators from neighboring Nassau County school districts including Lynbrook, East Rockaway, Malverne, Rockville Centre, Island Park, Freeport and Baldwin. Sponsored by involved PTAs, the institute is free for all parents and educators.

“My hope is that the Middle Level Parent Institute will enrich parents’ and educators’ understanding of all those developmental milestones that a 21st-century student faces today, not only in an academic setting, but in extra curriculars, sports, social media and peer relationships,” said Ms. Reilly. “We want to provide a resource for one another to support the success of our children in school and later in life to ensure they become productive members of society.”
