West Hempstead faculty convene for opening day

The District held its Superintendent’s Conference Day on Sept. 1 and 2, welcoming instructional staff to an exciting and enriching school year.
The conference kicked off with warm welcomes and introductions from Kathleen O’Farrell, president of the West Hempstead Association of Supervisors and Administrators, Barbara Hafner, president of the West Hempstead Education Association, and Vincent Trocchia, vice president of the district’s Board of Education.
Superintendent of Schools Patricia Sullivan-Kriss offered the faculty encouragement that they would find support from the district and success in their teaching throughout the school year.
“I believe that teaching with purpose, teaching with passion and teaching with kindness is our daily mission as teachers and as members of a staff who work with children in West Hempstead,” she said.
Following the welcoming remarks, the teachers attended presentations by Dr. Devin Thornburg, a professor and department chair of education at Adelphi University, who spoke about cultural competence, and attorney Christopher Mestecky, who discussed district procedures.
Concluding the two-day conference, the staff attended faculty meetings to discuss goals, expectations and ways to be successful in the upcoming school year.
