Coinciding with their study of insects, first-graders at George Washington Elementary School learned about butterflies by creating their own butterfly marionettes with the help of the Center for Puppetry Arts in Atlanta, Georgia.

The students participated in a videoconference with the Center’s Distance Learning Puppeteer and Presenter, Brian Harrison, who discussed the anatomy of insects, the life cycle of butterflies, and how insects use camouflage to protect themselves from predators. Harrison also showed the students a few species of butterflies, including monarchs, swallowtails and Acadian Hairstreaks.

Working with an array of colored construction paper, the students followed step-by-step instructions given by Harrison to assemble their own butterflies.
