Second-graders at Cornwell Avenue Elementary School collaborated to make a boat float during a recent STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) challenge.

Working in groups, students were given 10 straws and 10 inches of plastic wrap to construct a boat that would stay afloat while holding 25 pennies. Applying their critical thinking skills, the children created a variety of vessels out of the materials given to see whether they would sink or float in a tray of water.

Following the activity, the students shared how they constructed their boats and the reasons why they sank or sailed.
