The district celebrated the 105th anniversary of Chestnut Street School on Jan. 16 with a performance by its youngest students and the ringing of the historic Meneely Bell.

In an homage to the rooftop feature, the school’s kindergartners worked with their teachers and art teacher Kathleen Kayton-Courtney to fashion personalized bell hats for the special occasion. Sporting their festive headwear, they recited the poem “I Love My School” and sang “Happy Birthday” alongside John Shaud, president of the West Hempstead Historical Society, as well as teachers, central administrators and Board of Education members.

Chestnut Street School Principal Faith Tripp marked the anniversary by ringing the bell that sits atop the building, which was formerly used to signal the arrival and dismissal times of the school day.

The kindergartners joined in the fun by ringing miniature replicas of the bell, provided by the West Hempstead Historical Society, at dismissal time.
