In conjunction with Fire Prevention Month, students at Chestnut Street Elementary School explored the importance of fire safety on Oct. 11. Members of the West Hempstead Fire Department visited the building and reviewed fire/emergency protocol such as calling for help and staying out of harm’s way.

As a special highlight, children had the opportunity to tour an actual fire truck in the school parking lot. With assistance getting in and out, they entered the truck, walked around it and learned about the tools, equipment and uniforms that are used to put out a fire.
