West Hempstead Board of Education reduces school tax levy

July 23, 2007

On the evening of Tuesday, July 17, the West Hempstead Board of Education reduced West Hempstead’s school tax levy by 0.85%. This is the first time in recent memory that the West Hempstead School District has been able to decrease the tax burden of its residents. The Board of Education was able to lower taxes through long-range financial planning, diligence in seeking out savings opportunities, additional revenue sources and increased state aid to education. After passing the resolution that resulted in the reduced tax levy, Mr. Vincent Trocchia, President of the West Hempstead Board of Education, commented “This news deserves a round of applause! This is this the first time we have been able to reduce taxes as long as I have been on the Board. This is something that helps all of the residents of West Hempstead.”

While the tax levy has gone down, the entire 2007-2008 School District budget remains in place. This budget was overwhelmingly supported by West Hempstead residents through the budget vote on May 15th. Some highlights of this year’s budget include:

  • Additional staff for elementary and special education
  • A ninth grade teaming pilot
  • Graphing and scientific calculators
  • Elementary science textbooks
  • Curriculum improvements
  • Expanded use of data and professional development to strengthen instruction and improve student performance
  • Building and field improvements for students and community users.

The Board of Education looks forward to continuing to provide high quality educational services for West Hempstead residents and to the high school students from Island Park, while continuing to find ways to provide tax relief to homeowners.

West Hempstead - A High Performing School District

May 11, 2007

On Friday, May 11, 2007, the West Hempstead UFSD received notification that it is recognized as a High Performing School District by the New York State Education Department under the No Child Left Behind Act for 2005/2006. Dr. Carol Eisenberg, Superintendent of Schools, thanks everyone in the West Hempstead school community for the collective effort needed to achieve this status.

Individually, West Hempstead High School has been named a High Performing/Gap Closing High School for the second year in a row! The Cornwell Avenue School and the George Washington School join the High School in being recognized as High Performing/Gap Closing schools. High Performing/Gap Closing schools and districts have been recognized because during the 2005-2006 school year they met all applicable State standards for English/Language Arts and math and also made Adequate Yearly Progress in English/Language Arts and math for two consecutive years.
