Throughout the West Hempstead School District on Sept. 11, students and staff came together to recognize the 25th anniversary of the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, through lessons, activities and acts of remembrance.
At West Hempstead Secondary School, social studies teachers incorporated lessons on the history and lasting impact of 9/11, providing students with opportunities to learn about the events of that day and reflect on their significance.
At Chestnut Street School, Cornwell Avenue School and George Washington School, students participated in a variety of age-appropriate lessons and activities in recognition of Patriot Day. The activities emphasized patriotism, community and the importance of remembering the lives affected by the events of Sept. 11. As an additional tribute, students at each of the district’s elementary schools planted American flags throughout their respective school grounds, creating a visible display of remembrance and respect.
Many students and staff members also wore FDNY and NYPD shirts to honor the firefighters, police officers and other first responders who demonstrated extraordinary courage and selflessness on Sept. 11, 2001, and in the days that followed.
Through these meaningful activities, the West Hempstead school community honored those who lost their lives, recognized the heroes and first responders who answered the call, and helped ensure that the lessons and legacy of Sept. 11 continue to be remembered by future generations.
