Mentorship in motion at George Washington School

West Hempstead Secondary School students are making a meaningful impact this spring as Mentorship Week took center stage at George Washington School, and the results have been nothing short of extraordinary.

Throughout the week, students from the secondary school’s Music, Culinary, and Visual Arts departments stepped into leadership roles, visiting George Washington classrooms to lead engaging, hands-on learning experiences for younger students. The initiative created a powerful connection between schools, as older students shared their talents, passion, and knowledge in ways that brought each subject area to life.

On March 23, student mentors from the Music Department worked closely with George Washington students, guiding them through sight-singing, harmony, dynamics, and performance refinement. Their efforts were supported by the dedicated mentorship of Mr. Ben Coleman, Mr. Daniel DiPasquale, and Mr. Joseph Kane, whose guidance helped foster both confidence and musical growth.

On March 30, the Culinary Department, led by Ms. Stacy Gulisano, transformed the classroom into an interactive kitchen experience. Sixth-grade students explored the science behind recipes and measurements, blending learning with creativity in a lesson that was as educational as it was enjoyable.

The week concluded on March 31 with an inspiring visit from Ms. Cassie Ross-Dinin and the Visual Arts Department. Through hands-on exploration of the elements of art, students were encouraged to see the world through an artist’s lens, sparking creativity and leaving a lasting impression.

Mentorship Week stands as a shining example of what is possible when students, educators, and school leaders come together around a shared purpose. The collaboration not only enriched the learning experience for younger students but also empowered West Hempstead Secondary School students to serve as role models and leaders within their district.

Thanks to the collective efforts of teachers, principals, and assistant principals, this initiative has planted seeds that will continue to grow — strengthening connections, inspiring curiosity, and fostering a culture of leadership for years to come.
