Students throughout the West Hempstead School District helped promote heart-healthy living as they took part in the annual American Heart Association’s “Kids Heart Challenge” during the week of Feb. 14. The nationwide fundraiser promotes physical activity, heart-healthy living and community service for children.

At Cornwell Avenue School, students played basketball during their physical education class on Feb. 15-16. Many of the students did different basketball drills as they worked on jump shots and lay ups. George Washington School students took part in the AHA’s Jump Rope for Heart program from Feb. 14-16. Both events also gave the students the opportunity to learn about how their hearts work and different physical activities to improve their health.

Both George Washington and Cornwell Avenue students raised money online and in person, asking their family and friends to make donations. In total, both schools raised more than $1,300 as of Feb. 23. All proceeds will go to the American Heart Association to help with their effort to build healthier lives, free of cardiovascular disease and stroke.
