WHMS Practices Confidence and Kindness
Young women from West Hempstead Middle School recently participated in Beautiful Me, Self-Esteem Rising, a program presented by The Hance Family Foundation that covers topics such as self-esteem, positive body awareness, healthy relationship and leadership skills, self-confidence and other empowerment themes.
Members of the school’s support staff facilitated small group sessions during lunch periods for both in-person and virtual learners. Counselor Angela Sigmon has been involved in the program since West Hempstead introduced it a few years ago.

“I really love being a facilitator since we began doing Beautiful Me a few years ago,” Angela said. “The young ladies are always smiling at the end of the program.“

The program culminates with the receipt of a gift; a necklace with three hearts representing completion of the program accompanied by a note that reads, "Thank you for taking the time to learn how to feel strong, confident, and kind to others. You are beautiful!"

Connecting through Kindness in West Hempstead
Members of the Dignity and Tolerance Club at West Hempstead Middle School celebrated kindness and positivity throughout the week of Feb. 7, culminating with PS I Love You day on Feb. 12. The purpose of P.S. I Love You Day is to destigmatize mental health issues and remind students that they are cared for.

“We want to let the kids know we’re here for them,” school social worker and club adviser Cari Lubliner said.

The theme for this year’s P.S. I Love You was “together we will rise.” Students created posters with QR codes that directed those who may be in need to the Long Island Crisis Center and placed positive notes throughout the building. Additionally, the school’s student council donated money for purple bracelets with special messages inside.
