With summer winding down and the start of a new school year fast approaching, the West Hempstead School District brought students, families, staff and community members together for a special afternoon of connection, creativity and fun.
On Aug. 26, the district hosted “Our Story, Unplugged,” a community event celebrating the many stories, experiences and traditions that make the West Hempstead community special. The afternoon offered families an opportunity to reconnect, enjoy time together and build excitement for the school year ahead. Guests explored a variety of interactive stations throughout the event, with activities designed to engage community members of all ages.
Young students enjoyed “Word Literacy Games,” featuring hands-on word play and language activities, while “Pioneer Sports: Word Games” brought literacy outdoors through relay races, letter tosses, sentence scrambles and story charades.
The event also created meaningful opportunities for families to share their own stories. At the “Community Story Wall,” visitors contributed words and lines to a collective RamFam story, while the “Tell Us Your Story” station invited guests to share a favorite memory or story through writing, audio or a photograph.
The “Storytelling Photo Booth” gave families another way to capture the afternoon, featuring word-bubble signs and storytelling prompts inspired by childhood books. At “Sing the Story,” guests joined in storytelling songs, a freeze dance and a kid-friendly karaoke corner. J.Coles Hip Hop Dance Kids provided live music throughout the afternoon, adding an upbeat soundtrack to the day’s activities and helping keep the celebration lively and engaging for families.
Of course, the afternoon included something sweet as well. “The Sweetest Part of the Story” featured ice cream and snacks, complete with literary-inspired puns. Families also had an opportunity to learn more about available resources at the RamPathways Booth, which highlighted the 21st Century Community Learning Centers RamPathways grant program and family resources.
Held outdoors, continuing a tradition of summer community gatherings, “Our Story, Unplugged” provided a relaxed and welcoming setting for families to spend time together before the halls and classrooms filled once again for the new school year. More than an afternoon of games and activities, the event celebrated the connections that make West Hempstead a strong and caring school community. From shared stories and laughter to music, creativity and play, “Our Story, Unplugged” gave the RamFam one more opportunity to come together before beginning a new chapter.
As the school year approached, the district was proud to celebrate the people who make up the West Hempstead community—and the many stories that continue to shape the RamFam experience.
