West Hempstead Secondary School welcomed students and families for its annual Family Literacy Night on Oct. 22, bringing the school community together for an evening celebrating literacy, creativity and the power of storytelling.
With a mystery-themed concept, “Read Between the Lines: There’s Always More to the Story,” the event invited participants to explore stories from different perspectives, follow clues, solve problems and discover new ways to engage with reading. The evening’s theme encouraged curiosity and highlighted how literacy extends beyond the page, connecting reading with critical thinking, communication and creativity.
Throughout the event, students had opportunities to collaborate with their peers, share ideas and participate in activities designed to make literacy engaging and accessible for people of all ages. The variety of experiences encouraged participants to explore, create and learn together, reinforcing the idea that reading can be both an individual discovery and a shared adventure.
Student collaboration and engagement helped bring the evening to life, as the activities created opportunities for participants to exchange perspectives, work through challenges and connect with stories in meaningful ways. By blending literacy with interactive experiences, Family Literacy Night celebrated the many ways students can develop their skills while building confidence, curiosity and a love of learning.
The annual event also underscored the importance of bringing families and schools together to support literacy. By creating a welcoming environment for readers of all ages, West Hempstead Secondary School continued its commitment to making learning engaging, inclusive and connected to the broader school community.
Family Literacy Night served as a reminder that every story offers an opportunity to ask questions, discover new ideas and see the world from another perspective—and that the joy of learning grows when people explore those possibilities together.
