West Hempstead recognizes 31 NYS Seal of Biliteracy recipients

The West Hempstead School District proudly celebrated 31 students who earned the prestigious New York State Seal of Biliteracy during a recognition ceremony held on June 12 at West Hempstead Secondary School.

The New York State Seal of Biliteracy recognizes graduating seniors who have demonstrated a high level of proficiency in English and at least one additional language through rigorous coursework, assessments and presentations. This distinction is affixed to students’ high school diplomas and signifies their commitment to multilingualism, cultural understanding and academic excellence. Recipients will also wear special regalia during graduation ceremonies to commemorate their achievement.

This year’s honorees demonstrated proficiency in multiple languages, including Spanish, French, Haitian Creole, Italian and Hungarian. Six students earned the Seal of Biliteracy in two world languages, with combinations including Spanish and Italian, as well as Italian and Hungarian. Additionally, this year marks the first time that students earned the Seal of Biliteracy in Haitian Creole and French, highlighting the district’s growing linguistic diversity and commitment to celebrating multilingual achievement.

The honorees were treated to a special breakfast in the videoconference room at West Hempstead Secondary School, where they were recognized by Assistant Principal Vronski Mesidor, members of the ENL and Humanities departments, and district administrators.

Earning the Seal of Biliteracy requires students to complete challenging academic coursework and present evidence of language proficiency in both English and another language. The designation provides graduates with a valuable credential that is recognized by colleges, universities and employers.

The district congratulates all 31 students who earned the New York State Seal of Biliteracy and commends them for their dedication, perseverance and commitment to becoming multilingual global citizens.
