West Hempstead Secondary School has been recognized for its commitment to academic achievement among student-athletes by being named a 2025-26 School of Excellence by the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHSAA).
The designation is part of NYSPHSAA’s annual recognition of schools whose varsity athletic programs demonstrate a strong commitment to academic success. This year, 118 schools statewide received the School of Distinction Award, while 237 schools, including West Hempstead Secondary School, were named Schools of Excellence.
To qualify as a School of Excellence, at least 75% of a school’s varsity teams must earn the NYSPHSAA Scholar-Athlete Team Award. For a team to receive the Scholar-Athlete designation, the average grade-point average of the top 75% of its roster must be at least 90%.
The School of Distinction designation requires 100% of a school’s varsity teams to earn the Scholar-Athlete Team Award. West Hempstead Secondary School’s recognition highlights the academic accomplishments of its student-athletes and the efforts of its athletic programs to emphasize success both in the classroom and in competition.
According to NYSPHSAA, the awards recognize schools that have demonstrated an “exceptional commitment to academic achievement.”
The School of Excellence designation reflects the dedication of West Hempstead’s student-athletes, coaches, teachers, families and school community in supporting academic achievement alongside athletic participation.
The West Hempstead School District congratulates the student-athletes, coaches, teachers and entire West Hempstead Secondary School community on this well-deserved recognition and celebrates their continued commitment to excellence in both academics and athletics.
