The mini theater is almost fully functional. This is going to be a great space for public speaking, debates, small group work, etc. I’m excited to see the finished product and to have our students utilize the space.

I would like to recognize and thank all our student athletes who participated in the fall season and who plan on playing a winter sport. Athletics teaches students valuable skills and life lessons, including: teamwork, leadership, accountability, time management, personal and social responsibility, goal setting, etc. To be a part of the athletic program is a privilege. Student athletes are held to a certain standard. Section VIII, the governing body for inter-scholastic athletics, has a code of conduct for our student athletes, supplemented by our school district’s various codes of conduct. To quote Section VIII, athletics “Recognize[s] and value[s] the experiences individuals from diverse backgrounds bring to education based interscholastic athletics on Long Island.” Section VIII athletics is committed to “bring equity and inclusivity to all student athletes” in athletic programs. Section VIII athletics has a zero tolerance policy regarding harmful actions taken by adults in and around Long Island sporting events. Any incident by a student athlete that is determined to go against the Team Up for Unity mission statement (“…sports free from racism and all forms of negative bias.”), will result in a one contest ban in addition to any other penalties set forth by the Sportsmanship committee and the Section VIII bylaws. Any player ejected from a contest will receive a one game suspension. A second occurrence in the same sport will result in a two game suspension. A third occurrence will result in the loss of the season. Section VIII athletics and West Hempstead’s athletic code of conduct ensure a safe a welcoming environment for all our student athletes. I would like to thank Matthew Olszewski and Keenbelynn Bellande for being the inaugural participants during today’s Team Up For Unity training session. Nassau County (Section VIII) and Suffolk County (Section XI), in partnership with the Long Island Nets of the NBA G League, have implemented initiatives regarding equality and anti-racism education across high school sports. Sports have historically been a platform for all races to come together to achieve a common goal. Participating in athletics can play a tremendous role in furthering social justice.
