Andrew Schreck and Sofia Varone

The district is proud to announce that two West Hempstead High School musicians have earned NYSSMA All-State honors. Senior Sofia Varone was selected to the All-State Vocal Jazz Choir, one of only 24 students chosen in the state for this honor, while senior Andrew Schreck was selected as an All-State alternate in violin.

“This honor means so much to me,” said Sofia. “It reflects the hard work that not only I provided, but the hard work of my chorus teacher [Nicole Blier].” Sofia notes that she hopes to continue her musical pursuits of vocal performance once she graduates.

“It is very rewarding to be chosen as an alternate,” said Andrew. “So many people have supported me through this process, especially my orchestra teacher [Dan DiPasquale].” Andrew added that he would like to continue playing the violin as a hobby upon graduation.

“Congratulations to Sofia and Andrew on this tremendous honor,” said Director of Fine, Performing and Culinary Arts Dr. Nichelle Rivers. “Sofia and Andrew both exhibit tremendous talent and dedication and should be applauded for their outstanding efforts. In addition, we offer our congratulations to their teachers Mrs. Blier and Mr. DiPasquale for their commitment to their students.”

The NYSSMA All-State Performance Ensemble will take place from Dec. 2-5 in Rochester.
