Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day. There was a tradition of decorating graves with flags, flowers, and wreaths. Today is a day for remembrance of those who have died in service to our country. Thank you to those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

As a reminder, the Board will host its first meeting tonight, May 24, to discuss its next steps following the defeat of the proposed 2023-24 budget. Tonight’s meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. at West Hempstead Secondary School in the videoconference room. As the Board seeks to formulate the revised plan that will be presented to voters on Tuesday, June 20, all residents are encouraged to attend to provide input. Once again, the district thanks all community residents who participated in last week's budget vote and trustee election. While we are disappointed with the outcome of the budget vote, together we can work towards building a brighter tomorrow, even in the face of this setback. Please note that the Board of Education will host a series of public meetings to discuss the next steps. The meetings will be held on the following dates: Wednesday, May 24 - Budget Discussion Wednesday, May 31 - Budget Adoption Tuesday, June 13 - Budget Hearing All meetings will begin at 7:30 p.m. at West Hempstead Secondary School in the videoconference room. We invite and encourage all residents to attend to learn about the next steps. Great news! After reviewing the District's financials, Moody's announced today that the District retained its strong Aa3 credit rating, due to the District's "healthy financial position supported by strong reserves and stable operations." A strong credit rating allows the District to borrow money at lower interest rates. The Rating Action has been released and is now public.

Thank you to everyone who came out to vote in the 2023-24 budget vote and trustee election. The proposed school budget was not approved: 1,169 yes and 1,310 no. The Board of Education will hold meetings in the coming days to discuss its options. Congratulations to the following candidates who were elected to the Board of Education: Joseph Magaraci, 1,271 votes David Lazar, 1,298 votes Ray Duran was re-elected to the library board.
