Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the US commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans.Juneteenth marks the anniversary of the announcement of Gen. Order No. 3 by Union Army general Gordon Granger on June 19, 1865, proclaiming freedom for enslaved people in Texas.
Intentional misinformation is again being circulated in the community about the District’s budgeting and finances. The District presented the facts in its most recent budget presentations to counter this misinformation, yet the anonymous authors of the most recent flyer being circulated have once again chosen to ignore the facts in an effort to mislead the community. We encourage all residents to review the videos from those budget presentations, the budget materials on the District’s website, and the information presented in the budget revote edition of The Educator, or to reach out to the District before they head to the polls on June 21st.

The proposed budget supports the district’s continuing initiatives, such as the new math, science and social-emotional learning programs, as well as project-based learning and career exploration opportunities, among others.
A portion of the proposed budget also supports students who do not attend West Hempstead Public Schools. Over $6 million (around 9%) of the proposed budget would cover costs for students who do not attend schools within the district. Those costs include transportation, special education and health services, textbooks and staffing.

The proposal represents a reduction of $256,000 from the initial budget. In addition to using more fund balance, where did the reductions come from?
• Savings from the realignment of middle and high school administrative staffing due to the creation of a secondary school.
• Additional savings from retirements not known when initial budget was developed.
• Negotiation of teachers' contract.
• Actual costs of insurance premiums. This cost is less than the estimate provided to the district when the initial budget was presented.
• Elimination/reduction of some administrative software.
• Elimination of a teaching position.

Did You Know?
Unlike New York City, residents of Long Island school districts can vote on school budgets. If you moved from New York City, if you have lived in the West Hempstead school district for at least 30 days prior to the June 21st vote, and if you are registered to vote, you can vote in the school budget vote on June 21st. You can register to vote through June 16th at the school district offices, located at 252 Chestnut Street, West Hempstead.
